At Village Development Centre (VDC), we are dedicated to promoting sustainable agriculture practices that not only nourish the land but also empower farmers. In 2009, with the support of Onaway Trust, UK, we initiated the "Dissemination of Vermicomposting Technology among 30 Dalit Farmers for Organic Food Production." This transformative project was implemented in Ayyampalayam, Sirugudi, Chinnakattukulam, and Kuruvampatty villages in Mannachanallur block, Tiruchirappalli district.
Through this initiative, we empowered farmers with the skills and knowledge of traditional farming methods, harnessing centuries-old wisdom to build sustainable agricultural practices.
Farmers learned the art of preparing vermicomposting, a rich organic fertilizer that enriches soil and supports healthier crop growth.
The project also introduced farmers to the production of farm compost and organic pest control mixtures, reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Efficient water management techniques were imparted, ensuring that water resources were used judiciously, even in rain-fed ponds.
Farmers were educated about mulching, a practice that helps conserve soil moisture and prevent weed growth.
The importance of preserving indigenous seeds was highlighted, as they are well-suited to the local environment and contribute to biodiversity in agriculture.
Farmers were made aware of the potential drawbacks of genetically modified seeds, emphasizing the value of traditional and indigenous varieties.
The project underscored the significance of biodiversity in agriculture, promoting the cultivation of a variety of crops to enhance resilience and sustainability.
As part of this initiative, we established and nurtured 30 organic farmers groups, creating a network of like-minded individuals committed to sustainable and organic food production.
Through the "Dissemination of Vermicomposting Technology" project, VDC took significant strides toward building a more sustainable and ecologically responsible farming ecosystem. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Onaway Trust, UK, for their invaluable support in making this initiative possible.
